I’ve seen angels with dirty faces and tattered wings cursing at clowns and tripping playing children. I’ve seen angels dizzy from breaking promises and hiding behind toothless smiles. I’ve seen them in hospitals, post-op, after having their halos removed, unable, or unwilling, to live up to sinners’ expectations. An angel helped me escape the city one dark night after a blackout, flew me over the turnstiles at Penn Station, cleared a path for me onto the Erie-Lackawana, and delivered me back home in time for the apocalypse. Say a prayer for the angels. After all, they didn’t ask for the job.

Down the Rabbit Hole
